Fandom Overviews
(or What Nim is Writing About and Why You Should Care)

Harry Potter
I assume most of you are here for the HP and don't need an overview, but anyway. Orphaned wizard, raised in a cupboard, destined to save the universe, yadda yadda yadda. It's all window dressing for the real protagonist, Severus Snape, snarky unhygienic double agent extraordinaire.

Homework: Harry Potter and the... Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince (J.K. Rowling)

My Fic: Where do I start? I write everything from fluffy humour to wrist-slitting angst to filthy twisted dirty smut -- sometimes all in the same fic. Lots of Harry, Sirius, and Snape, in various combinations, but also many, many other pairings -- including some odd ones. Arthur/Dudley, anyone?


Star Wars
We all know The Phantom Menace sucked. It doesn't matter. For one shining moment that whiny little padawan who would be Ben Kenobi was on his knees, weeping for his fallen master. The prequels opened a world of disciplined warriors with this fantastic one-on-one teaching system that sparked my imagination.

Homework: The Phantom Menace (George Lucas), The Jedi Apprentice Series (Dave Wolverton, Jude Watson)

My Fic: Mostly Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, more romance and humour than my HP fic. Characters from the Jedi Apprentice books show up a fair amount, particularly Qui-Gon's Turned former apprentice, Xanatos, and Obi-Wan's childhood rival, Bruck.


Firefly
This is a new fandom for me, but one many of my friends had been pressing me to give a chance. I finally gave in and... SHINY. This show is a strange blend of science fiction and cowboy genres, a true space western. It follows the adventures of the crew of the Firefly-class ship, Serenity, as they do what they can to make ends meet in a far-from-utopian future.

Homework: Firefly: The Complete Series, Serenity (Joss Whedon, Tim Minear)

My Fic: Not much so far, but there's both fun-n-fluffy and dark-n-disturbifying.


Macdonald Hall
Boots O'Neal is a perfectly sane, normal teenage boy (barring his unfortunate given name of Melvin). His roommate at Macdonald Hall is not. Bruno Walton is a man of ideas, of action. Wherever there is injustice, Bruno will be there to form a committee, take over the local television station, or build the world's largest pop-can pyramid.

My Fic: Nothing yet, but I have two in progress. *scuffs toes* Both of them will be funny when they're done, though.


The Neverending Story
The story alternates between Bastian, lonely human boy, and Atreyu, the hero of the book Bastian has 'borrowed' from a strange shopkeeper. I can't tell you how much my eight-year-old self wished to be sucked into an adventure with Atreyu, who was then a much older man of twelve, and his long hair and open shirts. These days I'm more interested in what happens when Bastian grows up and his stories become more... sophisticated.

Homework: The Neverending Story [Movie], The Neverending Story [Book] (Michael Ende)

My Fic: Only the one, which is a WIP crossover with Harry Potter and a few other fandoms.


Gargoyles
This show rocked. Intelligent, interwoven plotlines. Ambiguity among both the good guys and the bad guys. Sophisticated character arcs and sympathetic villains. Shakespeare, and lots of it. Very dark for a show ostensibly aimed at children, Gargoyles places a medieval clan of the title creatures in modern Manhattan. While they adapt to their new home and sudden status as the last of their kind, they find themselves facing the same problems they did in the past.

Homework: Gargoyles Season One, Gargoyles Season Two, Vol. 1 (Greg Weisman)

My Fic: Again, just the one, and it was my very first fanfic ever. Darkish.


Fortress
Tristen is summoned out of thin air by the wizard Mauryl. With no memory, no knowledge of basic facts such as fire=hot, and frequently with no clothing, Tristen sets out to find his place in the world and perform the unknown task for which Mauryl summoned him. What he finds is Cefwyn, a bored prince, grandson of the man who destroyed Tristen's people. It is, quite literally, love at first sight. Okay, platonic love, but my God, the subtext.

Homework: Fortress in the Eye of Time, Fortress of Eagles, Fortress of Owls, Fortress of Dragons (C.J. Cherryh)

My Fic: Only the one, and it's very short and gen. I really wish there was more of a fandom for this series.

Accessing Explicit Fics
If you can't open a story, check the rating. You must be logged in to read the explicit fics, and you must agree to the age disclaimer on your info page. If you are logged in and still cannot view the fics, select 'Your Account' from the menu and click on 'Edit Personal Information', and select yes in response to the age disclaimer.

Layout Issues
If you're having difficulty viewing the site, change the skin to default. I know it's not very pretty, but it's been tested far more than I'm capable of testing my own designs.

New Story Alerts by Email
If you want to be notified by email when the site is updated, you must have "send me an e-mail alert when one of my favorites is updated" checked off in your profile. Then you need to decide what content you want to be alerted for. If you would like an email when there are any new stories, click on any story, then click "watch for all new fics" at the top. If you only want to watch for updates to certain stories, go to the story and click "watch this story for updates." To turn off email notification, either edit your profile again, or go to Your Account and click on Manage Story Alerts.

Happy Christmas, Harry Potter
I want to update this, trust me. I'm perpetually swamped with new fics and fic ideas, so finding the time and energy to get back to HCHP is tough. It's high on my list though.

The Domestication and Training of Serpents
This will never be finished. I know some of you really liked this fic, but I'm afraid it was never going anywhere in particular.

Jedi Exiles
Again, I'd love to finish this. I have the entire series plotted out, but I'm battling both inertia and fandom drift on this one.


Permissions for Use

Art
If you want to use my art for your website or an icon, please ask first. Some artwork was commissioned, and it belongs to the person who ordered it. In the case of sexually explicit art, I don't want it easily available to younger fans and people who aren't expecting it, so I like to know that the site maintainer labels everything correctly and is not targeting a younger audience. I almost always say yes to requests, but if you don't ask first, I will ask you to take it down, and most likely throw big hissy fit to boot.

Fic Archiving
It depends on the archive, and which fic. These days I'm not very comfortable with archives that aren't author-controlled. As with art, ask first and abide by my decision, and there will be no hissy fittage. Please to be noting that me not responding to a request does not equal permission.

Translations
I've never said no to a request to do so, but I require three things: 1) my name and a link to this site stays with the story, 2) you provide me with a link to the archive where the translation is to be posted, and post it only to that archive, and 3) if at some point I ask you to take the translation down, you take it down. Trust me, I would only do this in dire circumstances.
